Shivneri is a village situated in the Pune district of Maharashtra, India. It is a hill fort located to the north of Pune district, near the town of Junnar. The significance of Shivneri lies in its historical importance as the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire. The fort was built by Shivaji’s father, Shahaji Raje, to provide protection for his family from invaders and natural disasters. The fort features seven historic gates and is well-preserved. The building where Shivaji was born remains intact and sturdy. The fort can be easily reached from Junnar town and offers panoramic views of surrounding forts like Narayangad, Hadsar, Chavand, and Nimgiri.
